Your life is just like a fuse, you got to ignite it to make it beautiful. You won’t be able to re-fuse the car fuses available with Partsavatar.ca

Car Fuses and its various types
What is a Fuse?
Automotive fuses help in protecting the electrical equipment's of your vehicle. There are various fuses present in the market, but the main function of every fuse is the same. This car part has a metallic wire, which is closed in a non combustible material. If more than the specific amount of current passes, then the wire placed inside the fuse would melt as heavy current was flowing through it. Then ultimately the power supply is disconnected.

Types
There are various types of fuses present in the market and they can even be further categorized. Fuses can be divided into two main categories depending upon the input supply of the voltage. They are:-
  1. AC Fuses
  2. DC Fuses
There is not much difference between the two fuses mentioned above. Let us first understand DC fuse system. In this system, the metallic wire melts due to over current. This produces the Arc and one cannot get rid of it because of DC constant value. DC fuse is bigger than the AC fuse in size so that it can minimize the fuse arcing. It is helpful as the distance between the electrodes would increase, thus reducing the arc.

In AC Fuse, it has voltage with 60Hz or 50Hz and its frequency changes from 0 to 60 every second. There is no such problem like DC fuse in this system, so the arc can be extinct effortlessly. That’s why AC Fuses are smaller than DC Fuses.
Fuses can further be categorized as:-
  • One time use
  • Re-settable Fuse
One Time Use only Fuse
These types of fuses contain a metal wire which would burn out as soon as over current passes through it. You would have to substitute these fuses manually. The fuses are inexpensive and are used almost in every electrical system. This type of fuse can be categorized as:-
  • Fuse Current Carrying Capacity
It means that the maximum amount of current which a fuse can carry without breaking the circuit.
  • Breaking Capacity
The maximum value of current that can be interrupted safely by the fuse is known as its breaking capacity.
  • Response Characteristic
More the amount of current flowing through wire more would be the speed at which the fuse would blow. Higher the current, faster would be the response time. Ultra fast fuses are the ones which respond quickly to the over current situation. Semiconductor devices get damaged very easily due to over current, that’s why they are used in them.
Another type of fuse which is very famous is a slow burn fuse. They do not blow away instantly when over current occurs. Instead, they take a few seconds to respond.

Car fuses act as bodyguards in automotive world. Whenever there is any unexpected threaten to the automobile, then it is the fuse which bears this tough situation and throws itself into the field of fire.
Are all the Fuses used in car the same?
All the modern cars posses ATO and ATC blade type fuses. The blade type fuses are available in multiple sizes and have different configurations. One important thing which you should keep in mind is that all of them resemble each other a lot physically. They differ in size and even the numbers of terminals vary.  These exhaust parts which are larger in size can be used for the appliances which generate higher current.
Earlier the vehicles had glass tube fuses and you can still find them in the older models of automobiles on roads. These types of fuses have a glass tube, some metal terminals and have a metal strip on the surface which passes through the center.

Now you know that the fuses which are used in automotive can differ in the basis of size as well as the level of current flowing through them. This means that all the fuses are not the same.
Where can you use Fuses?
  • Auto motives
  • Air-Conditions
  • General electrical appliances
  • Laptops
  • Printers
  • LED monitors
  • Power converters
How Fuses Work in an Automobile?
Have a look how the automotive fuses work step by step. This would be the same for all kinds of vehicles.
Step 1
The circuit is protected from overloading or short circuit with the help of a fuse. The area at which a fuse is located is a vehicle’s power distribution center.
Step 2
There are a number of heavy and light duty fuses present inside the PDC. They help in protecting various circuits.
Step 3
There is a particular fuse rating specified for every fuse. If the circuit amperage exceeds the specified limit, then the element would melt.
Step 4
All the fuses are defined on the basis of amperage rating and the main motive is to give protection.
Step 5
The Fuse power is joined to the positive side of the battery.
Step 6
If you want to inspect the fuse, there is a tool supplied in the PDC with which you can carry out your inspection.
Step 7
The two terminals would be broken as soon as the fuse element is blown away, thus protecting the circuit from damaging.

A fuse is basically designed in such a way so that it can cut the flow of voltage if the current is flowing more than the specified limit. Most of the PDC’s are situated under the hood.
