In reality it is really very easy to change your car oil and you do not require much car maintenance skills. A little bit of supervision is needed for the first time.
Collect the basic information about your car
Before you start doing, you need some information first. You will have to buy oil and a new oil filter. Before buying any specific type of oil and filters, note down the following information about your car:
  • Year
  • Make
  • Model
  • Engine displacement size
  • Oil type
Refer to your car manual as it would have most of the above mentioned information. There may be a sticker inside your car, which would tell you that what type of oil you would need. Once all the information is collected, then you can go to any store which sells auto parts. You can also look up at stores like Napa Canada or partsonline if required. Buy enough quantity of oil so that you can fill your car properly.
When it comes to oil filter, it can cause some problem. The main reason behind this is that there is no standardized part naming scheme for oil filters. Once you have the above mentioned information, then you can easily look up at the type of filter which you need.
Step 1- Grab all the tools
Before you start changing your oil, make sure that you have all these tools
  • Car jack
  • Socket wrench
  • Towel or a blanket
  • Oil
  • Oil filter
  • Funnel
Once you have all the necessary tools, and then run your car for a minute or two so that the oil in your car warms up a little bit. When you put it up on the jack, at that time the car should be off. The only benefit of turning the car ON previously is that it would help the oil to flow out easier.
Lift your car up with the help of a jack and then you can safely work underneath it. It is essential to use a jack or else your car can fall on top of you.
Step 2- Drain the Oil
Then the thing which should be done is draining your oil. You can gently place the oil pan beneath the plug. You should locate the drain plug. If you are unable to do so, then you can always refer to your car’s manual. The oil drain pan should be totally underneath the plug so that it can catch all the oil which would come out from your car.
Wear rubber gloves before you continue. The oil inside your car would be very hot, so kindly use a wrench to loosen the plug. Remove the drain plug as quickly as you can. Let your vehicle empty entirely. Replace the plug and then you can move on to the next step.
Step 3- Replace the Oil Filter
The next step is to replace the oil filter. Some more amount of oil would come out of your vehicle, so the oil pan should be under your oil filter. There are different types of oil filters. Unscrew the old oil filter and then loosen the plastic cover. Remove the old filter. Wait for some time and let it drain completely. Use a paper towel to wipe off the opening. Replace the filter with a new one and then tighten the seal.
Step 4- Refill your Oil
Once everything is sealed properly, then refill the oil. Refer to your car’s manual and then fill the oil accordingly. To refill your oil, you will have to first remove the oil cap from the top. Then gently place the funnel inside the hole. Pour the oil into the funnel and then replace the cap and tighten it.
Then you can take the car off the jacks and turn the car engine on. Give it some time and let it run a bit so that the oil can run through the system. Turn your car off after a few minutes and then you can check your dipstick. The level of oil should be between the two dots.
Step5 - Dispose of the Oil
It is illegal to dump car oil in an unapproved area. You can give your oil to the auto parts stores and other gas stations as they would dispose the oil on your behalf.
