Stay Safe on the road

Labor Day weekend is an opportunity to relax and enjoy a much needed adventure. But it is also a dangerous time on Canadian roads. Drivers will take to the highway for one final summer getaway making it one of the busiest holiday travel weekend of the year. It is estimated that near about 368 traffic fatalities and injuries occur during this weekend.

1. Check your car’s wiper blades and fluids. Provide proper maintenance and prepare your vehicle for a long distance ride.

2. Before you get on a highway, know your exit by name and number and watch the signs as you near the off ramp.

3. Remember the trucks are Heavier and take longer to make a complete stop, so avoid cutting quickly in front of them.

4. Use a map or GPS and know your route to avoid panic search for directions.

5. When sharing the truck especially large ones, be aware of their blind spots. If you can’t see the truck driver in his mirrors, then the truck driver can’t see you too.

6. Don’t forget to pack a vehicle’s emergency kit that contains items like flashlight, jumper cables, tool kit and equipment and a spare tire.

7. Turn off your cell phone before you head out and keep your family and friends by not texting or answering the calls.
