Do you really want to know more about Car Braking System? Parts Avatar Canada is here to for you!!

Want to learn more about Braking Systems in Cars? Then you have arrived at the correct place – Parts Avatar Aftermarket Auto Parts

The most essential part of a car is probably the car brake system.  Just imagine that you are driving on a highway and suddenly you see a stop sign in front of you, and then you immediately press your brake pedal and it doesn’t give any response. Then how would your car come to a pause or what would actually happen because of that? The vehicles which are made these days are very complex and beyond our level of imagination. It has a number of auto parts which are working together to provide us with a pleasant ride. But now you must be wondering about the complexity of the constituents of a car braking system. Don’t worry! Have a look below:

Parts of a Car Brake System

There are a number of parts in the car braking system which interprets the actions of the drivers into some sort of physical force which makes the car come to a pause or stop. One of the most prime brake parts is the car’s brake pads. A key brake part is dominated by the brake pads because it is that constituent that contacts as well as applies pressure to the car’s brake rotors. They are shiny discs which can be easily seen behind the car wheels. When some sort of pressure as well as friction is put on the brake rotor, then due to that the rotating speed starts decreasing and this would ultimately stop the wheel.

Now when the wheel has stopped turning, then the vehicle would also stop to cover the distance. You must be aware about the concept of friction which is proved by the scientists. When a car wheels stops, it is not at all easy to stop the rotation of a wheel. A large amount of heat is released into the brake pads. When there is a large amount of heat in the braking system, then the brake disk would start glowing bright. Thus, we can say that the brake pads are an essential car part in the absence of which a car cannot function.

When should you replace the Brake Pads

Generally there is no specific schedule which would tell you when it is the correct time to replace the brake pads. The overall condition of the brake pads may start deteriorating because of a lot of reasons. It can be because of the amount of time it has driven, the number of stops and the climate in which a person was driving the car also matters a lot. So all you have to do is to depend upon your ears to hear the noise coming and at the same time should take some advice from a car mechanic as he has immense knowledge about auto parts.

You must keep this thing in mind to get your car tires rotated in half a year or at least after every 12 months. You can also get your car brakes inspected as well at this time. The overall condition of the brake hardware as well as the thickness of the pads would help a car mechanic to spot wear.

When should you replace Disc Brakes and Rotors

Generally today, all the cars have front and rear disc brakes installed. It is only with the presence of disc brakes that the brake pads can be replaced and the rotors are resurfaced on a lathe. This is done so that the surface becomes smooth.

After every two or three resurfacings, the discs should be replaced. There is no need to get astonished if your car mechanic told you to get your brake pads as well as rotors replaced. The main reason behind this is that the present ones may not have enough amount of material to be shaved off while resurfacing. It may not be reliable now, so that’s why it must be replaced.

You might sometimes notice that the people in the repair shop may not be willing to resurface the rotors. The main reason behind this is that it is a time consuming job. So that’s the reason why they insist people to get new rotors as well as pads installed.

We hope now you will be able to understand the importance of brake pads in your car and the amount of safety of the driver as well as his family totally depends upon well maintained car brakes.

Losing control of your car is a scary experience. Learn how to prevent and correct skidding in bad weather conditions @PartsAvatar Car parts.

Canadian winters especially snow can turn a safe road into a slippery one. Don’t worry, Armed with our knowledge and inexpensive Aftermarket auto parts, Parts avatar Canada has all of your bases covered~ Care for your Car parts at partsavatar.ca !

Car skidding is very dangerous and sometimes it can lead grave accidents in the road. You will notice skidding generally happening on wet or slippery surfaces.

Bad weather conditions like snow, rain or ice can turn a safe road into risky one. It can be a terrifying experience for you when you feel that you have lost control of your car when it skids out all of a sudden. While experiencing skidding if try many options like slamming brakes, turning the wheels in opposite direction or staring at the object we are about to hit, but unfortunately these measures are going to make the impact of skid worse. As the least damage impact you will need to replace auto steering system parts and car brake parts as they become prematurely worn.

So what makes your car skid? How to prevent it? How to steer out of skid? Read this article for your safety on icy or wet roads and avoid skid with preventive measures suggested by parts avatar.

Skid and its types
Skidding happens when your car loses traction from its wheels which can cause it to move uncontrollably. Either front wheels or rear wheels can experience traction lose in skid situation. In such situations, your tires may lose the control and grip on the road and will start sliding uncontrollably.

Keep in mind that if the tires don’t grip the ground it is like driving on the block of ice i.e. you will keep on sliding here and there until you crash into other object. In such situation, you will make things worse by applying brakes or tuning the wheel. In turn you will end up ruining brake pads and will need to replace car’s brake pads. There are different kinds of skid that you can face on slippery roads. Have a look!

Under steer or Front wheel traction lose
Under steer is caused when your front car wheels lose traction while cornering. When you turn into a corner, the front wheels slide sideways which means that the car travels forward rather than turning. You car will slide away from the centre of the curve and possibly hit the oncoming traffic. This is usually caused while taking a fast turn.

Under steer is the easiest type of skid to handle and also it is least dangerous. It can be caused either turning too fast into a corner or applying too much power as you exit the corner. If you turn to the corner too fast, the weight of the car shifts towards the sidewalls of the tires and it no longer provides gripping.

Over Steer or Rear wheel traction lose
Over steer happens when your car’s rear wheels lose traction while cornering. The wheels will slide towards the outside of the curve. Your car’s front end will point either to the left or the right of the intended path despite your steering input.

The front wheel begins to turn but the back wheel spins out to the outside of the curve causing the rear of the car to fishtail or slide from side to side. It has further sub types as: power over steer and lift off over steer.

Power over steer is usually used in drifting to achieve big, Smokey power slides. Only rear wheels can perform power slides. Lift off over steer is much pronounced in rear engine mid size cars like Toyota MR2. The solid lump of metal at the rear acts like a pendulum.

Hydroplaning

Hydroplaning or aquaplaning is caused when your car’s tires rise up on the top of a layer of water because the tread cannot disperse the water fast enough. Once this happens, you will briefly lose steering ability because your tires are unable to get any traction. This scenario happens when it is raining or snowing.

You will notice a small jerk in the direction you are heading once your tires regain traction. The shallower the tread on your tires the more likely you are to hydroplane.

Wheels locking up
Slamming or stepping on the car’s brakes too hard will cause the wheels to lock up. In such situations, avoid driving too close to the vehicle in front of you.

If your car’s wheels lock up, don’t accelerate further. Instead carefully steer the vehicle and brake slowly. If the roads have thick sheet of ice on them, wheels can lock up due to the tires attempting to grip the surface of the road.

What to do?
There is no different process of recovering from a skid for front and rear wheel drives.

Take your feet off the pedal
Whenever you feel like your car is skidding the first thing to do is to get your foot of the accelerator. Do not press the brake pedal as it may make things worse. It is useless to apply brakes in such situation and the acceleration is the root cause for skidding.

To slow down the car let your skidding tires gain some traction and they will eventually contribute in slowing your car down. Do not panic and get your feet off the accelerator and brake pedal.

Gentle steering input
Always steer in the direction you want the car to go. It is foolish to steer into the skid.  While the car is skidding, look directly at where you want to go not at the objects you want to avoid. For example if you focus on a tree, your hands will follow your direction and that’s where you are going to end up.

Whether your front or rear wheels are skidding, correct direction to steer is inevitably in the opposite direction that your front end is headed. So, once you know the direction to steer, make sure to steer gently.

Re- distribution of vehicle weight
As you begin to regain the traction on wheels, you’ll want to gently apply the brakes or the accelerator. Gentle braking is done to re distribute the weight to those wheels which will help them gain even more traction. So, if your front wheels are skidding, you will want to apply brakes gently and if the rear wheels are experiencing a skid then you will find the need to gently apply the accelerator.

So all in all, depending on the type of skid (rear or front), apply brake or the accelerator gently.

Few tips for preventing skids

There are easy techniques that can keep you safe and prevent skid situation to happen.

1. Choose the speed according to weather condition. It is advised to drive slowly on wet, icy or snowy conditions. Fast driving often results in skidding.

2. Avoid phone calls and other distracting chores while driving and keep your hands on the steering and eyes focused on the road.

3. Maintain a proper distance between you and the car ahead of you. This way you will have plenty of space to react if something happens.

4. Decrease the car’s speed while taking a turn – it will help you stay in control.

5. Check your tires tread depth. Tread determines the traction on the road.

Using these techniques will help to prevent skidding and gain control of the car. Be attentive, stay calm and keep both hands on steering for a safe drive.

Take a look at most common Mistakes made by drivers while driving their automobile outlined by Partsavatar Car parts !!

Here’s a list of common mistakes we human beings make while driving- Parts avatar Auto parts.

As much as we love driving, we are still not perfect. Human errors have caused majority of accidents on roads and highways. According to a survey, nearly 98 percent of accidents on road or highways are mainly due to human error or sheer ignorance.

No wonder due to this problem, auto makers are planning to introduce self driving cars in the future with no stance of human error. Parts avatar’s main purpose is to make you aware of your bad driving habits (if any) and ensure your safety on the road. Take a look at following common mistakes the drivers are often found guilty of.

Riding the Brakes
Slamming the brakes gravely effects the lifespan of brakes and fuel economy too. A lot of folks have this habit of keeping their foot and right foot on the brake and gas pedal respectively at the same time, usually on lights. Mind you, this way you are paving the way for a premature brake wear.

It will impact not only your car’s brakes but also your safety might become risky. More serious accidents may occur as the motorists behind you will struggle to react to the jerking of your car. Take a wise decision and use your right foot to both brake and accelerate your car. If still you have got a car with damaged brake system parts, then you are lucky. You can Shop for aftermarket car brake parts at Partsavatar car parts.

Wrong Positioning of Mirrors

Car Mirrors, seats, seat belts and steering wheel’s adjustment is very important for your driving safety. If your driving position and mirrors are properly adjusted according to your comfort, then you can easily tackle any emergency situation on the road.

Drivers take mirrors for granted and mostly see this object as a piece of decoration. But these decoration pieces have more important job of providing you a clear view of your side and at your car’s back.

Poor positioning of side mirrors often leads to road accidents as people switch lanes without noticing another car coming right behind them. Do yourself a favor and adjust your car’s mirrors especially the side mirror in such a way that you completely eliminate blind spots and don’t see your own car in the mirror. If your car’s side view mirror or any other car’s mirror needs replacement, Parts avatar is here at your service.

Driving with Under-inflated tires
As always tires have been most overlooked auto part of car. At the same time it is very expensive to replace the set of tires with new if the old one gets damaged. But on road, one thing must be checked regularly i.e. inflation of tires. For a smooth ride, tires should be properly inflated.

Install car's TPMS sensors to track the inflation status of your car’s tires. But you should not wait for the light to turn on to inflate your tire. Checking car’s tire pressure regularly not only ensures your safety on the road but also improves gas mileage.

Not using Turn Signals
Turn signal is an important safety feature not only for us but also for the other fellow drivers on the road. It informs the other motorists on the road about our intentions to either turn or to go straight.

Accidents often happen when we don’t use a turn signal to indicate that we turning to the corner or changing lanes as it forces the other driver riding behind us to take immediate decision according to our actions. Or the worst is, sometimes we forget to turn off the turn signal and changing your mind in the middle of a maneuver can be very dangerous.

Drivers should follow proper driving etiquette on the road by turning on the turn signal light wherever necessary. Don’t forget to turn them off as the blinking light is quite annoying for other motorists.

Ignorance about Car lights
It is no wonder that most of the drivers are ignorant of exact use of car lights. They often get themselves a warning ticket issued due to such a mistake. One of the bad habits is to leave car’s high beams headlights on even if you see a car in front of you. Car’s High beam headlights are quite sharp and dangerous and can blind drivers on the road and can distract the drivers ahead of you and ultimately can cause severe road accident. So, people should be aware of when to use the car’s high beams and when to turn them off for everyone’s concern.

Car’s daylights are dimmer than other lights on most cars. Some drivers mistakenly leave them running at night. It is to be noted that whenever the daylights are turned on the car’s taillights are turned off at the same time. So at night, your car won’t be visible to other drivers on the road if the taillight is not running. So for your and other motorist’s sake, turn the car’s night lights at dusk.

Not using parallel parking Skills

For many folks, who don’t practice parallel parking regularly and even some who do, the act of doing so is extremely stressful. It can be confusing and often leads to curb scraping if you are a newbie to this skill.
So, practicing parallel parking will go a longer way towards hassle free experience and less damage to car will happen due to scrapping. So, practice it for your own good.

Crossing Lanes while turning
Most of the motorists cross multiple lanes while turning a corner which is quite dangerous. Execute a turn in your own lane and then use the turn signal to indicate that you are changing the lanes after taking turn.

Recklessly crossing lanes can lead to severe road accidents and head on collisions with upcoming cars. Follow a proper driving decorum for everyone’s safety on the road. Believe me this malpractice of crossing lanes is definitely going to cost you with big auto repair bills or even worst with your life. Rest is your choice!

Stopping deliberately without warning
Don’t be shy, we all do it sometimes! If we see something of our interest like “Hot Doughnuts”, we deliberately stop and try to take a turn. Mostly you slam on your brakes and come to an abrupt stop without warning the car tailing behind you.
Your car is likely going to collide with the other car coming from behind as it suddenly got red signal from your car’s taillight.

Drivers should be conscious of the cars coming behind and them they should stop slowly by giving other motorists a chance to adjust accordingly.
Please note that sometimes some auto scammers deliberately stop their car to claim fake auto insurance from you. So beware of such scammers!

If you pay attention to these mistakes and work on them, you won’t get warning tickets or large repair bills issued by your mechanic for any harm done by you. You can also Shop for good quality and affordable aftermarket performance parts at partsavatar.ca. Get the benefit of FREE SHIPPING for orders exceeding $99.

Do you use Parking brake everytime you park your car ?? PartsAvatar Explains everything you need to know about Parking Brakes!

How often do you use Parking brakes of your car? Let’s discuss the importance of parking brakes in this article – Parts avatar Auto brake parts

Why do we specifically call parking brakes as parking one? This is because they are meant to be used when you need to park your car. But the major question arises that how often do we use parking brakes? The answer is most of use the parking brakes on the hills or if your car’s transmission is manual. According to a research, about 82 percent of the vehicles with manual transmission use parking brake to park their vehicle.

This methodology is totally wrong. Whether you are in hilly or a flat area, using automatic or manual transmission, you should use parking brakes every time you park your car. Parking brake has nothing to do with the transmission mode and terrain.

Why parking brakes?
The parking brake on a car provides redundant safety feature that prevents unintended vehicle movement due to user error or the failure of transmission system. Not applying the parking brake means the driver solely relies on the transmission to hold the vehicle after he parks.

Parking brakes are one of the pivotal components of the car’s safety system. It is not only important part of manual transmission but also plays important role in automatic transmission. When a vehicle with automatic transmission triggers parking mode, parking pawl inside the transmission engages. Parking pawl engages into the notch ring that is attached to the output shaft of the transmission. When the brakes are engaged, the pawl restricts the transmission output shaft from turning.

If the parking pawl breaks or become dislodged then there might be a problem of car rolling away. This is the least case of hazard even though. But still we should take precautions. The parking brake enables strong hold of your car than just putting the car in “Parking” mode.

The steps to apply and release the parking brakes are quite simple. Most parking brakes are hand operated levers located in the center console. Steps to apply the parking brakes are:

1. Put your foot on the brake pedal.
2. Pull up on the parking brake handle.
3. Lift the handle as far as you can.
4. Put the car in park.
5. Take your foot off the brake pedal.
6. Turn off the engine!

It is to be noted that you should set the parking brake while your foot is still on the brake pedal, before shifting to “park”. This reduces the strain on the parking pawl.
Depending on the vehicle there are two ways to release the parking brake. In some cars, either the brake pedal is pushed until you hear a “click” sound or brake lever is pulled which is located near parking brake pedal. To release the parking brake:

1. Put your foot on the brake pedal.
2. Crank the engine.
3. Press the release button at the end of parking lever depending upon your vehicle while lifting up slightly.
4. Lower the lever completely. Make sure that the parking brake light disappears.
5. Put the car in gear.

Before driving away, make sure to disengage the parking brake otherwise it will ruin your car parts slowly. So make this a habit to apply the parking brakes when you park the car and disengage the parking brake before you drive. This also ensures the long-lasting life of your car’s brake pads.

Symptoms of a failing Parking brake and its parts
As a safety feature, all cars and trucks are equipped with parking/emergency brakes. These brakes are not only meant to park the car but also can be used in an emergency situation. There are certain symptoms that sign towards malfunctioning parking brakes. For the sake of your safety, pay attention to the following symptoms.

Parking brake not engaging properly
It the very first signal of a malfunctioning parking brake. If there is a problem occurring while pulling or engaging the parking brakes, it means the parking brakes have gone bad and you may not be able to engage them in emergency situations or to park your car.

Parking brake won’t release
Another symptom is parking brake not disengaging properly. Parking brake may have issues while disengaging if the lever gets stuck or jammed. It is not good for your vehicle because if you start driving with parking brakes engaged, it will cause the brakes to overheat and sustain damage.

Parking brake shoes does not hold vehicle
If the parking brake shoes become worn, they lose their tendency to hold and secure the weight of the vehicle. It may cause the car to roll on inclined surfaces like hills which is quite dangerous.

If the parking shoes are severely worn, the end result will be a non operational parking brake. This increases the risk of rolling and accidents on inclined surfaces. Parking brake shoes of your car play an important role in parking brake control. Make a visit to your mechanic and replace the car parking brake shoes if they are worn.

Parking brake cable malfunctioning
Parking cable in many cars is used to activate the parking brake. A failing parking cable may result in vehicle rolling down the surface or getting into a serious accident.

If the parking brake cable becomes excessively worn it will not be able to pull the parking brakes tightly. This may cause the vehicle to roll even if the brakes are engaged due to loose gripping. Parking brake won’t be able to function if the cable breaks.

Another symptom of a broken or worn out parking release cable is illuminating car's parking warning light switch. If the parking light switch is still illuminating even after disengaging the parking brakes, it means that cable has been stuck or the release process has not been performed properly.
If you suspect any issue then get your parking brake cables replaced.

Parking brake release cable fails to disengage the brakes
The parking brake release cable’s main task is to disengage the parking brake. Make sure your car’s parking brake release cable is in good condition otherwise issues with disengaging of brakes effect the brake and transmission system drastically.

If you are unable to disengage the parking brakes, there are chances that the release cable has been broken. Waste no time and get your car checked by technician immediately.

The parking brake release cable corrodes over time. In cold temperature areas, the cable may become frozen and fails to disengage the brakes when needed. It is wise to first warm up your car before disengaging the brakes if it is freezing outside.
If you are driving your car with the parking brakes still engaged, you are just ruining your vehicle’s entire braking system yourself. Save yourself from unwanted repair bills.

Repair parking brake
Parking brake repair is also a part of car’s routine maintenance. You can easily maintain some of the components of the parking brake system or at least could decrease your repair bill.

Make small adjustments
Check your car’s service manual and make small adjustments like tightening the cable or removing the additional slack.

Apply lubricant
Lubricate the parking brake system if they become sticky by time. If you have problem releasing the brakes, sometimes the brakes might be demanding lubrication. Review entire parking brake mechanisms for further lubrication by removing rear brakes if the stickiness still persists.

Replace worn cables
Carefully replace the worn cable. A damaged cable results in malfunctioning parking brakes and inability to stay on an inclined plane. There are chances of rolling of car if the cable breaks. For your safety, without any delay, get them replace if necessary.

So, with this guide, you will get to know about another important safety feature of car.

How to help stay safe while driving during Storms and Heavy Rains

Parts avatar suggests some tips by which you can avoid certain accidents during storms and rains

Driving in Storm and rain can be dangerous. It can be hard to see the road and air pressure and water also alter the handling of your car. The dark clouds and strong winds pose grave threat to your vehicle. To get where you need to reach safely in storms or heavy rains, its better to plan ahead and check your auto parts. Sometimes its better to stay off the road until the weather clears, but if it’s very urgent then you can take cautions.
To help drivers cope with bad climate, Parts avatar suggests some car care tips so you can ensure that your car is ready for any season.

Let us read about some parts to be checked upon before getting on the road.

HEAD LIGHTS WINDOWS AND WINDSHIELDS

In bad weather, visibility is the first matter of concern for the driver. A lot of car owners do not pay attention to the wiper blades of cars, windshields, headlights and windows. Make sure these auto parts are clean as they can hinder your visibility on the road. Clean the windshield of car at least once a month. Check your headlights if they are working properly.
Check to see if your electric windows are working.

WINDSHIELD WIPERS

The worn out rubber on wiper blades will not only fail to clear the rain drops but also would leave scratches on the windshield. Ensure that the vehicle’s wipers are working fine at any speed. Rubber wiper blades wear out by time, leading to streaks or patches on the windshield.

It is better to change the rubber on the wiper blade after one year for better visibility in rains and storms. If you notice cracks or chunks on rubber, you can wipe it off with the help of alcohol for the time being.

The motor which runs the wipers also wear out timely, so check it out and replace if necessary. Check the washer fluid level and fill it if necessary. You can also install car's washer fluid level sensors to detect low level of water.

BRAKES

When it comes to driving, brakes of a car cannot be ignored. Ignoring brakes can cost your life. Check your brakes thoroughly.

Make sure that the brake pads are still working properly and still provide friction material. A lot of mishaps happen on road due to brake failure. Sooner or later you will have to decide what level of repair does your  car's brake pads and auto brake shoes need.
Due to friction and thermal energy they are highly prone to wear and tear. Brake pads and brake disc work together in order for your car to stop or slow down.
If your brake fluid is not up to the required level and is dirty, it means you need to change your car’s brake fluid.

TIRES

Tires are often overlooked. Make sure they are properly inflated. The tread of the tire creates grip on the road by channeling debris, mud and water away from contact patch. By time, the tread wears down and the tire starts to slip or spin on wet surfaces.
Your wheels should be properly aligned to avoid potholes and bumps.

While checking tires you can consider the following points:

1. Maintain tire pressure as recommended by the manufacturer.
2. Ensure that your spare tire is in working condition.
3. Treads must be of depth minimum 2 mm otherwise there would be danger of skid and slip on the road.
4. Good treads also prevent hydroplaning so make sure your tire’s tread is in good condition.

BATTERY

Your car would run as long as your battery is fine. Mostly battery related problems occur in rainy season or hailstorms. An immense pressure is on battery from wipers, headlights, air conditioning and even radio. Make sure your battery is working fine. Turn off unnecessary applications like radio, gps and even air condition wherever necessary. Headlights are very important to work even in day time. Sometimes weather is so bad and dark that it is very hard to see the objects on the road clearly. So headlights consume a lot of battery to operate.

It is better to check your battery if it is fully charged and can get you to your destination without any problem.
You can replace your car battery at aftermarket cheap prices if necessary.

HEADLIGHTS

During storms or rains, it is possible that the visibility is almost zero. Make sure that your headlights, tail lights and indicator lights are working properly. Always turn off additional entertainment applications of your vehicle so that headlights do not go dim and get full battery power. At the time of bad weather, it is necessary for you to stay safe and reach early rather getting entertained.

SAFETY TIPS FOR DRIVING IN HEAVY RAIN

1. Avoid hydroplaning on wet roads. If you start to hydroplane somehow, keep both hands on the steering wheel and apply the brakes gradually. Suddenly slamming on the brakes would cause your car to skid.

2. Slow down your car’s speed if you approach puddles. It is also not a wise thing to drive rashly on wet roads as rash riding is always an invitation to death. Always maintain a certain genuine distance between your car and the most immediate car on your front.

3. Keep right and always give pass safely.

4. Avoid using cruise control. Cruise control is helpful on dry roads but on wet roads it may create problems. Cruise control is not that smart to detect water or wetness of the road. So using cruise control in rainy season may give invitation to hydroplaning.

5. Turn your headlights on to help other vehicles to see you on the road. Even in broad daylight, if the weather suddenly goes bad, you may have to turn the headlights on. So make sure the headlights are working fine.

6. If your engine stalls after driving in rain, do not try to restart it. It may cause severe damage to other parts also. So call for mechanic or professional.

SAFETY TIPS FOR DRIVING IN STORMS

1. Double the distance you would normally maintain from the car ahead of you.

2. Take special care when driving through areas prone to strong winds.

3. be aware of heavy vehicles on the roads. Drivers may have difficulties staying in their lanes.

4. In case you are driving a large vehicle, keep both hands on steering and keep full control of your car.

5. It is better to leave the road than to pull over to the side.

In bad weather whether it is storm or rain, it is better not to resort to some weird driving techniques or skills. Taking extra precautions and slowing your vehicle’s speed is going to add more guarantee to your safety.
